IBM Bob Adds Self-Hosted AI Deployment
IBM has introduced a self-hosted deployment option for IBM Bob, its agentic software development platform. Enterprises can now run the AI system on-premises, in private and sovereign clouds, and in air gapped environments without moving sensitive code and data to external services. For eeNews Europe readers, the move is particularly relevant as European organizations consider data residency, AI sovereignty, security, and governance when deploying generative AI. It also reflects growing demand for AI infrastructure that can operate within controlled enterprise environments. IBM Bob keeps AI closer to enterprise data IBM Bob applies AI to software development and application modernization rather than focusing only on code generation. With the new deployment option, organizations can run the platform where their source code, application context, and other data already reside. This approach targets companies working with intellectual property, proprietary source code, regulated customer information, and mission critical infrastructure. “The future of enterprise AI will depend on security, governance and sovereignty,” said Neel Sundaresan, GM of AI and Automation, IBM. “Organizations need AI that operates inside environments they have control over, especially when working with sensitive code and regulated data. Bob’s self-hosted deployment provides a way for enterprises to bring agentic AI directly to those environments so they can benefit from the technology while maintaining security, compliance, and operational control.” IBM cited research from its Institute for Business Value that found 68% of surveyed executives consider meeting data residency and sovereignty requirements across different geographies challenging. Support for hybrid and air gapped AI The self hosted IBM Bob can run supported AI models on premises, including within air gapped environments. Organizations can use supported models they have licensed or connect the platform to supported external model services through hybrid configurations. The deployment model is intended to bring AI processing to enterprise data rather than requiring companies to move that data to an AI service. IBM also cited Futurum Research projections that hybrid and edge deployments could account for 44% of the AI infrastructure market by 2030, while the public cloud share could fall to 46%. The company sees this flexibility as important for software modernization because enterprise applications and data are often distributed across on premises infrastructure, private clouds, and other controlled environments.
