Jolla delivered the first Sailfish OS smartphones to backers at a Day1 event in Helsinki on 8 July. The Finnish firm celebrated with its community as limited Inari Blue edition devices reached early supporters. First batch shipments to wider backers begin next week, with final assembly in Salo, Finland.
Jolla's Sailfish OS phones, assembled in Salo, Finland, represent Europe's challenge to the iOS-Android duopoly. As the only European mobile OS, Sailfish offers a privacy-first alternative built on open source principles. While market share remains minuscule compared to global giants, the project proves independent mobile ecosystems are viable. For EU digital sovereignty, Jolla demonstrates European hardware and software can coexist outside US-Chinese dominance. The critical test is app compatibility with national digital infrastructure like eID, healthcare, and citizen services, and whether governments will embrace this platform for digital wallets and public services, which is not fully the case yet.
The hardware is still not completely independent, though the final assembly takes place in Salo, Finland; some components, such as mainboards, are manufactured in Taiwan.
